“Piracy” Benefiting the Indie Artist

I continually love stumbling amongst these stories on blogs around the internet. A few months back it was Fleet Foxes praising internet piracy with their breakthrough success. The story is beginning to become all the more common, despite what organizations such as the CIRA/RIAA/BPI would lea you believe. The main thesis here is that music blogs (who sometimes link illegal or not approved MP3s of bands), YouTube, Imeem and so on are giving fans access to musicians music for free and hurting album sales. Well the real story typically ends up more along the lines of this story (which I read at from out friends at TorrentFreak, be sure to read the rest of the article, it features some great quotes from bedroom artist turned super-star Calvin Harris) about the band “Barcelona”:

Take a look at this very cool clip:

And now hear the bands response:

So, as it turns out this band has had a massive increase in album sales and fan-goers at their concerts. It’s hard to debate. Major labels and established artists may indeed suffer a bit from piracy, but fans seems to swing for the “little guy”, those indie artists in the trenchs. If I know anything about the human psyche it seems to ring true that we wanna see the little guy win.

Long live “piracy”.
