Shows Tonight: The Walkmen, Clues and Hey Rosetta!

Choices, choices, choices.
Tonight here in the GTA is an overload of amazing music, not to mention the kick-off of the Caribana Festival…. Here’s my top 3 choices for music tonight:

  1. The Walkmen (Lee’s Palace, 10pm, $16.50): New York bred quartet who deliver atmospheric, layered, and emotional rock and roll. Some are ballads, some are dreamy pop tunes and others are aggressive, in your face intense songs. Seeing these fellas live back in 2006 at the Phoenix was a great experience, they played (and sweated) with vigor and truly capitvated the audience. It proves to be a hell of a show tonight, especially with new buzz-band Cass McCoombs. Their debut album, “Catacombs” was recently reviewed at an 8.2 on Pitchfork and chosen as “Best New Music”.

  2. Clues (Silver Dollar, 9pm) : Members of The Unicorns and Arcade Fire make-up this new Canadian band hailing from Montreal. Their debut album still has elements of the wackiness that was Unicorns and those unique sounds that Arcade Fire has become so famous for. However, being a new band their live performance may lack a bit — but worth checking out!
  3. Hey Rosetta! (Harbourfront Stage, Free, 8pm): Well I have a sentimental resason for wanting to see the gang from St. John’s as I got to see them in their early days while attending Memorial out in NFLD. They’ve now exploded, making the Polaris Prize short-list. If you haven’t caught this amazing act, you should check it out, especially as it’s FREE!
