Well for all of you who have not had a chance to see a IFS show live, well now is your chance. Sure you’ve heard them all the time on CBC Radio 3 and maybe caught a youtube video or two, but really the live show is where it is at. This Halifax quartet make such good, and awe-inspiring music… from intricate slower songs, to my favorite’s they do which slowly build up on you and explode with sound. The guys formed at Mount Allison University (where I first met/saw them) in and around 2002/2004 and have since moved to Halifax and put out two full length albums (”Coast is Clear” and “We Are An Empire, My Dear”.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to them, do yourself a favor now. They have literally every track available on their CBC Radio 3 page.

And some great vids:

Well the past week has been bountiful for new music to posted online… here’s a good round-up from some highly anticipated new albums.

Them Crooked Vultures

The new super-group featuring Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters); Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age/Eagles of Death Metal) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)’s new album comes out November 17th. This is the first full-length song they’ve released! This should be a beauty of an album.

LCD Soundsystem

Well thank goodness DFA label owner James Murphy is up to it again. His last two albums (Self Titled and Sound of Silver) have been amongst some of the best and faves of critics and hipsters alike for the past few years. The single is called “Bye Bye Bayou” and is being released as a single on November 9th. The full length album is expected in.. March what a tease!

Julian Casablancas

Well “The Strokes” lead singer has been working on his solo project for a while… there’s been a few little leaks here and there over the past few months. The album “Phrazes for the Yonge” is coming out November 3rd (but has been leaked online as of Oct 26th). The first single, “11th Demension” is here… sounds pretty catchy!

There’s the roundup for now… keep tuned for more!

Well I finally had an epiphany and realized my longing to be back on the radio (having done college radio for 5ish years at CHMA 106.9FM at Mount Allison in beautiful Sackville, NB). So here’s my crack at the podcast world. The idea is to do at minimum a weekly podcast, but perhaps more, each with some sort of loose theme. Typically, but not always, featuring new Canadian music. I hope to give it a go and get listed on iTunes podcast directory an more.

So the first podcast features the likes of The Danks, Two Hours Traffic, Joel Plaskett, Thrush Hermit and The Superfriendz. It’s 30 minutes and I think you should give it a try, and not laugh at my rusty commentary style. I plan to smoke tons of smokes and drink lots of whiskey to get my voice to that desirable level.

So go ahead, check it out, and please share with your friends!

Well one of my favorite bands (in my top 10 for sure) is coming to Toronto tomorrow (Sunday, August 2 @ Kool Haus) and is a live show I’ve been craving to see since the boys from Cali released their first (entitled “Peace, Love, Death Metal”) album in 2004.

Let me set the mood with this video (play it an envision 4 very rocker-esque dudes coming in, long hair, tattoos, tight shirts and jeans… and dancing around on stage):

As leader singer Jesse Hughes comes out, adoring surely a woman’s size small purple t-shirt with a face imprinted on it, exposed tattooed arms shoulder-length greasy hair and aviator sunglasses on he dances around the stage to “Ladies Night”. Going side to side, greeting the crowd (mainly the girls) I can’t help but chuckle at this spectacle. I am about to see a pretty wicked rock and roll band and they’re blaring disco. I assumed the stereotype applied to rock bands about their dislike for disco — I know I actually enjoy disco/house/funk a lot so I got a kick out of it. But this is what’s different about EODM, they love the sexiness of the party and the show; and the anthem pounding is truthful — Jesse and Co truly see their shows as ladies night. A chance for the boys to bring their girls to a rock show which they will get all riled up about. The rest of the boys are interesting in their own regard: Dave Catching looks to be about 50, yet rocking a shaved head with a mohawk, huge eye-glasses and a kickass flying v guitar (he’d be a pretty damn cool uncle to have); Brian O’Connor looks sort of looming and scary, long black hair, dressed all in black, and yes his nickname of “Big Hands” is true. His hands look comparable to Shaq’s as he (somehow) manages to construe his sausage-fingers over his fretboard on his bass which appears to be the only bass he’s ever owned, beaten and worn down to the wood; and finally drummer Joey Castillo who looks like the hulk behind the kit, and has played with such epic bands as Danzig and is also the drummer for Queens of the Stone Age beats those poor drums to a pulp — all in all a very ecclectic crew on stage.

Jesse Hughes joined on stage by his lady, Cocoa Bubbles

The show goes on with the boys playing a great cross cut of all 3 of their albums all the while taking time to get all the girls to cheer, then the boys, then the girls. I am positive (although situated in the middle/back) that Hughes actually signed several girls breasts/chests throughout the show. Always giving the girls ample attention was the name of the game for Jesse. And then, the surprise in it all he keeps running side-stage to hug his nine year old son and even kisses him right on stage — man, how sweet is that!? I have never, ever seen anything like that, but it was so affectionate and caring (meanwhile daddy’s talking about sex basically throughout all his songs). And then Hughes’ lady friend/partner “Cocoa Bubbles” joins the boys on stage to help sing “The Devil” — ha I love it!

The show goes on, with high energy and a great crowd, Hughes’ proclaiming “What a perfect city to end our Canadian tour in! I love Toronto!” The show ends and a few moments later Hughes’ appears on stage, solo with a guitar and funnily enough wearing an Eagles of Death Metal t-shirt (again, I am certain it was a woman’s size small) and proceeds to play to great covers — BTO’s “Takin’ Care of Business” and “Stuck in the Metal”. After this he gives huge props to the roadies/guitar tech who are both Canadians and the boys come out to rock out for a few more songs…. All in all it was a top-notch rock show, and if you have a chance SEE them! And if you don’t know the EODM… get acquainted, quick. They are sure not to disappoint.

Enjoy some videos and tunes here:

The lead single “Crying Lightning” and its accompanying video was released a couple of weeks ago. Sounding a bit more dark and brooding as opposed to the previous two releases which were mostly explosive.

“Humbug” was co-produced with Queens of the Stone Age front-man (and Eagles of Death Metal drummer) Josh Homme and it shows in the songs of Humbug. It should be interesting to see how this album is recieved by fans and critics alike. With a slew of festival gigs and a full fall tour booked you’ll have a chance to see the lads soon (and hear new tracks maybe even before the album drops).

You can check out the lead single below (and I must admit, it’s damn catchy).

Well… it’s been a huge year for my 902 home-boy Joel Plaskett and Co. He’s dropped an epic 3-disc record (to pretty rave/critically accalimed reviews); Opened for Paul McCartney; Was mentioned on Perez Hilton for the 2nd time; Made the Polaris Prize Short List and was even in LA doing some shows. If you have (goodness forbid) not heard of Joel (consider yourself un-Canadian) or have only been blessed with his few hit radio songs… well this post’s for you. However, firstly may I select him as my hopeful to win the Polaris Prize. The guy has been at the game for over 15 years, going on 20 and through thick and thin he continually puts out amazing albums (6 solo; 3 as a member of Thursh Hermit — don’t worry I will get to them soon and even a live music DVD).

All the while he has refused to relocate to Montreal or Toronto (as many of his cohorts do to further their career — well that’s a simplified reason, it’s a lot more complex but I won’t get into it). Joel is a Nova Scotian and Haligonian through and through (and through) and is damn proud of it. As am I, along with a growing fan-base, young and old not only in New Scotland but indeed across the country and perhaps even into the US. Hell, this guy still does shows in tiny towns such as Sackville, NB – Springhill, NS (surely their only real rock show in since April Wine must have passed through in the 80s) and New Glasgow, NS. Gotta love him!

So, I wanted to ensure ya’ll had a chance to A) Hear lots from “3″, his triple album record with 9 songs per album but also shed some light on his earlier solo work and his days with Thrush Hermit. So to being with you can get an amazing cross-cut of Joel’s solo work over at CBC Radio 3, literally dozens of his songs (the first few are from “3″).

Here’s the hit single video from “3″:

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. His 2004 album “Truthfully, Truthfully” and 2002’s “Down at the Khyber” offer even more rockier tracks which are amongst my favorites. Some of them: Come on Teacher; Extraordinary; Down at the Khyber; True Patriot Love; Maybe We Should Just Got Home; Work Out Fine… ah the list goes on! Check them on CBC Radio 3 but I will post a couple of my fav videos here too:

Finally we cannot post about JP and not mention Thrush Hermit. Oh what a band. The boys formed in/around Halifax in the early 1990s and proceeded to put out 3 awesome records and even reached the MuchMusic countdown in 1998/99 (and I can remember being in junior high, coming home on Friday and simply rocking out to this song all by my lonesome):

And here’s how the rest of the story of the legendry “Thruh Hermit” went down, according to Wikipedia:

“Thrush Hermit returned north to release their final album, Clayton Park, on Sonic Unyon in 1999. Despite the critical success of the record, Thrush Hermit announced their amicable split on September 21, 1999. However, they would do a farewell tour just before permanently breaking up. During the tour, a few shows were canceled due to Plaskett’s health. Medical examinations showed that he had a dangerously low level of white blood cells. Later examination showed that he was back to normal and could continue remaining shows. Thrush Hermit played their final show on December 2, 1999 with The Deadly Snakes and split up thereafter. Plaskett’s medical problems inspired his own solo album In Need of Medical Attention.”
